Here's something that might surprise you:

Modern trauma therapy doesn't try to make you calm. It doesn't try to eliminate fear.

Why? Because fear is controlled by your autonomic nervous system. You can't just decide to turn it off.

Telling someone "just calm down" is like telling someone with a broken leg "just walk normally." It doesn't work that way.

    So what DOES work?

Teaching you to contain emotions without fighting them.

The goal isn't to never feel fear. The goal is to expand your capacity to feel fear (and other difficult emotions) without collapsing, without escaping, without being overwhelmed.

This is called increasing your "window of tolerance."

When your window is narrow, even small stressors feel unbearable. When your window is wide, you can experience intense emotions and still function.

You don't need to be calm to fly. You need to be able to hold fear without letting it control you.

    Big difference.
