Any child from age 3 or 4 understands: You can't lose something you never had.

You can't lose a toy at the playground if you didn't bring a toy.

So why do adults fiercely believe they "lose control" on airplanes?

Because they believe they HAD control everywhere else. But they didn't.

We control almost nothing in life:

    • Not the weather
    • Not other drivers on the road
    • Not the bacteria in our bodies
    • Not the structural integrity of bridges we cross
    • Not the systems keeping our electricity running
    • Not other people's choices

We like to believe we're in control. It's comforting. But it's an illusion.

Most people are okay with this. They live their lives without needing to control everything.

But about 30% of people find "being out of control" unbearable. Why? Because early in life, their brain learned: Being controlled by others = danger.

Solution: Control everything and everyone. Always.

On a plane, that illusion shatters. And the anxiety floods in.

But you're not losing control. You're just losing the illusion. And that's not the same thing.
