Your fear of flying might have nothing to do with airplanes at all.
When you feel anxious on a plane, your brain is actually reacting to something from your past. Your amygdala (the fear center in your brain) detects similarities between the flying environment and previous traumatic experiences. It activates the alarm system to protect you.
But here's the catch: Your conscious mind doesn't understand this internal process. Instead, it searches for external explanations. You start focusing on the pilot's tone, the weather, turbulence, or mechanical sounds. Your thinking brain tries to justify why you feel afraid by finding "proof" that something is wrong with the flight.
This creates a double problem:
First, you try to calm down (which doesn't work because fear is controlled by your autonomic nervous system)
Second, you convince yourself the danger is real (which makes the fear even stronger)
Understanding this can change everything. Your fear is real, but it's coming from within, not from the airplane itself.
